In 1931 it was very hard to find a job, because the great depression had hit Tennessee hard. One day, Hazel’s dad had come home really sad, because he’d lost his job. Later, Hazel and her mom went to a baseball game. Hazel and a boy named Timmy went to sit down, and Hazel saw Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jackie Mitchell. Babe Ruth was one of the all-time greats of baseball history. Timmy had a nickel, so he bought a box of Cracker Jack. A nickel would probably not be enough for Cracker Jacks today. Most things were way cheaper back then than they are now. Timmy and his friends were kind of mean to Hazel. I bet they wouldn’t act any different now than they did back then.
